Overview

Traditional oils, wonderful as they are, take a very long time to dry. That's why we created our Griffin Alkyds - they dry much more quickly and this means impasto and glazing techniques can be done in a single session. We've created 48 tones and these have a slightly greater level of transparency for increased depth and clarity when glazing. Our Griffins are a bit more fluid in consistency than traditional oils and they dry with a somewhat more reflective surface, too.

Faster drying time than traditional oil colour

Following the popularity of acrylic colours, which dry in 10-20 minutes, oil painters began requesting a product which dried faster than traditional oils. Winsor & Newton responded in 1976 by developing a range of alkyd colours, which has today become Griffin Alkyd Fast Drying Oil Colour. Alkyds are made from a naturally derived vegetable oil that is polymerized. The result is a resin-like product that, when mixed with a solvent, is very similar to traditional linseed oil. The colours remain workable for 4 to 8 hours and are touch dry in 18 to 24. Consistent drying times across the range removes the usual restrictions that come with conventional oils, making it easier to overpaint, regardless of the colour upon the surface.

Griffin oil paints is your next transitional step

"Started to learn oil painting in an adult art class. Most classes don’t allow liquin or solvents in the center due to the smell or health issues. Love how these griffin oil paintings can help dry my work fast so that I can keep up with the pace of the teacher along with finishing my homework before the next class in my busy life where waiting for paint to dry is a MAJOR problem. It is also helps me transition from acrylics to oil painting. The smell, drying and workability in your water-based oil paints didn’t work for me. Please keep providing griffon paints in the store so that I can still learn to oil paint. Thank you, I really appreciate it!"

I love this Windsor Newton

"I love this Windsor Newton Griffin Alkyd pigment for the technique of underpainting with terre verte green as a verdaccio. It dries very quickly and is transparent, so it creates a luminous effect when painted over an initial rough blocked-in underpainting with diluted raw sienna alkyd. A good foundation for creating the final colors of the painting, using thin layers of transparent pigments."
