Making an Impact, Axel Jonsson, 2026
About the prize
The International Art Prize is free to enter open call for drawing and painting running simultaneously across London, New York and Paris, founded by Winsor & Newton and Paul Smith’s Foundation. Three winning artists are chosen by a notable local industry representative. This year’s theme is: ‘Making an Impression’.
About the process
Created in response to the theme ‘Making an Impression’, the work began with the artist's reflections on those whose contributions often go unrecognised. Rather than depicting these ideas directly, the painting settles on a quieter scene: a young man buttoning his collar before a mirror. Rendered in a style that balances naturalism with subtle humour and absurdity, the work invites viewers to consider how significance can be found not only in grand gestures, but in the quiet rituals and everyday moments that shape our lives.
‘Making an Impact’ was painted using Winsor & Newton Artists' Oil Colours. Axel selected a curated palette of colours including Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Quinacridone Red, Burnt Umber, Prussian Blue and Titanium White.
