Frequently Asked Questions
Who is TerraCycle®?
Recycle the unrecyclable. TerraCycle has been shaking up the system for over twenty years, recycling the stuff no one else will, across 20 countries and counting. From their HQ in New Jersey, TerraCycle is on a mission to eliminate the idea of waste, transforming trash into raw materials, building global reuse systems, and proving that creativity and sustainability go hand in hand.
Why can’t I just recycle these products at home?
Many art materials, like paint tubes and marker pens, are made of mixed materials or contain residue that traditional recycling systems can’t handle. That’s where TerraCycle comes in.
What happens to the recycled materials?
Metals are sorted, smelted, and formed for use in secondary metals manufacturing. Plastics are cleaned, sorted, and mixed with other plastics to make recycled plastic blends. These blends are used to manufacture products such as industrial drainage pipes, storage boxes, and plant pots, or as filler in extruded product applications such as lumber and sheeting.
What materials can’t I send in?
To keep the program effective and safe, please don’t send:
Brushes, palettes, jars, rags, or cloths
Packaging that can already be recycled through regular curbside programs (like cardboard boxes, paper sleeves, or recyclable plastics)
Any hazardous waste or containers with wet paint
What does TerraCycle actually do with the waste?
TerraCycle specializes in recycling hard-to-recycle materials. They break down the collected items and process them into raw materials that can be used to make new products. This keeps waste out of landfills and incinerators, and gives it a new life.
I already recycle at home. Should I still use this?
Yes, if the product is included in this program and not accepted through your regular recycling, this is the right stream to use. But please continue to recycle what you can through existing municipal systems, that’s always the first step.
