Winsor & Newton + Tate: Collection I: Let the greatest artists guide your creative journey

tate sets winsor and newton

Together with iconic British art gallery Tate Britain, we have produced a range of limited-edition sets of artists’ materials designed to introduce you to the styles and techniques of some of the world’s greatest artists.

Winsor & Newton and TATE have both been shaping art for centuries and many artists exhibited in TATE’s galleries have used Winsor & Newton extensively in their practice.

Together we chose six artists in Tate Britain’s collection and curated box sets connected to each one’s practice. The six artists, who are all considered masters in these materials, are John Singer Sargent, Edgar Degas, J.M.W. Turner, Wassily Kandinsky, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and Victor Pasmore.

One of the reasons this is so exciting is that the collection explores a range of artistic practices, across a timeline that spans three centuries. From Sargent’s gestural pencil drawings that he made as a break from his society portraits, to Victor Pasmore’s graphic shapes and flat colours, the artists chosen have an appeal across a range of interests.

While we may never be the artist Degas was, we can learn his techniques with dry pigment and how he worked with colour to capture the theatrical light around the dancers. In watercolour, Turner was a master at capturing light and atmosphere in the landscape.

The gestural and expressive abstract marks of Kandinsky in oil and Barns-Graham in acrylic are similar in their concerns with colour shape and form, but Kandinsky’s colour theory was steeped in the spiritual meaning of colour and Barns-Graham was pushing the limits between abstraction and expression in her forms derived from the landscapes in Cornwall.
