Rose Madder

Rose Madder is a unique pigment that is still made by a method Winsor & Newton have used for over a hundred years. The raw material for this colour is the madder root, and the dye extracted from this root is soluble in water so it must be fixed with a stable base. This extraction process allows the madder root dye, when dry, to be deposited in a solid rock-like form. These solid forms are then ground into a fine pigment powder and combined with a Gum Arabic solution to form the pigment we know as Rose Madder.
