Mixing Chromatic Greys

Chromatic Greys are created from a primary triad of red yellow and blue to create an impressive range of mixtures. Here we are working with Winsor Lemon, Cadmium Red and Ultramarine Blue and we begin by mixing a black using all of these colours. We start with the blue and add relatively little red and yellow for our black, and then add white to a portion of the mix. When we see that the black leans towards one colour or another, you can add colour to balance that out, adding yellow to a violet black will push it towards green, for example. Then you can adjust by adding more white and the original black, with a touch of red. By using this limited palette, you can mix chromatic greys intuitively and explore a wide range of possibilities.
