Five Essential Acrylic Mediums

Winsor and Newton Professional Acrylic Paint

Acrylic paints are water-based paints which, in their various forms, can be applied in many ways to a range of surfaces. In order to maximise the versatility of acrylic paints, artists can add mediums to alter their texture, thickness, drying time and finish.

We spoke to artist Debbie Bryan about the most essential  mediums for artists working with acrylics. What follows is a list of five indispensable mediums and descriptions of their transformative properties.

Professional Acrylic Glazing Medium

Acrylics can produce an almost cartoon like appearance in strong, bold colours, but adding a glazing agent alleviates this by giving the paint a transparent quality. This means layering of the paint is possible, creating more depth of colour and allowing more freedom to experiment.

Professional Acrylic Slow Drying Medium

Acrylic paint dries very quickly, which can be a bonus when working at speed. If, however, you want to slow down the drying process of the paint or a particular colour, this medium will retard the process, providing precious extra working time.

Professional Acrylic Flow Improver

Acrylic paint is known for its density. A flow improver gives acrylic paint increased fluidity, allowing an even flow of colour and easing the process of covering larger sections of your preferred surface uniformly.

Galeria Range Texture Altering Mediums

These mediums add different textures to paint: sand, pumice, glass beads, small and large grain can be added using these mediums to enhance and alter the look and ‘feel’ of acrylics. Imagine a beach with the added texture effect of real sand? If you would like to add elements of collage to your work, these mediums are ideal.

Professional Acrylic Gloss Gel

Many artists love that flat finish that can be achieved with acrylic paint, but Gloss Gel adds brightness while maintaining the thickness of colour. The medium produces an even gloss finish, lifting the colours and maximising their transparency and depth.
