Using Artisan varnishes with traditional Oil Colours

artisan varnishes with oil
Artisan varnishes may be used on top of conventional oil colour. As with all varnishing, ensure that the painting has been allowed to dry for a minimum of 6 months. It may be best to give the painting a light rub over with Artists’ White Spirit before applying the varnish.

Wiping it very lightly over with white spirit allows you to clean the surface from any grease or grime that has got onto the surface. If there was any trace of grease on your painting and you varnished without cleaning it off, the varnish would reticulate into beads where the grease is. The cleaning ensures that the varnish applies well.
