2018 testimonials

Winner Tomas Ortolani, Argentina

‘My experience as a contest winner was amazing. From the first moment in London they made me feel at home. I was able to know all the facilities of Colart, from the laboratory to the offices. The artistic study assigned to me is huge, full of all kinds of materials at my disposal to experiment with them and to carry out my project.

During that time I had the mentoring of the renowned Spanish artist Jose Carlos Naranjo and Mathew Gibson, who introduced me to the artistic life of London, like gallery openings and art studios. At the end of the month I made an open-Studio at Colart, showing my way of working and my procedure to all the new friends I made during my stay. No doubt the next winner will enjoy a great time in such a wonderful city, surrounded by the warmth of the people of Colart.’

Runner up Sian Costello, Ireland

‘When invited to visit the headquarters of the world’s leading manufacturers of artist’s materials, I hardly imagined there’d be such a warm welcome let alone a fully decked out breakfast bar. There was something really dazzling yet familiar about being behind the scenes of the paints and tools I use every day; from burrowing into the archives to buttoning up the lab coat, I must have been brought through hundreds of years of discovery and experimentation in just one day. Though it was the people I met in Winsor and Newton that really made the trip worthwhile, never having been to such a major capital as London I wasn’t expecting the openness and warmth with which everyone met me. My guide for the day was Mathew Gibson, who spared no effort in making me feel at home and who introduced me to both the exciting work of resident artists and personal friends working in London. Getting the opportunity to meet and chat with artists Sarah, Xiaojun, and José Carlos, was something I’ll forever be grateful to curator Becca Pella Fry, who made everything possible for me in the Start Your Scholarship award. I can’t wait for my next trip to London, this trip only whet my appetite!'
