Seven important things to know about Art Canvas

  1. Art canvasCanvas is most  commonly used as a support for oil and acrylic colours.

  2. Canvas used for oil colours should be stretched as tightly and be as stiff as possible. For greater stability, oil colours require an inflexible support.

  3. Canvas used for oil colours should be double primed for stiffness, stability and longevity.

  4. Because acrylic colours are more flexible than oils, canvas for acrylics can be used in a variety of ways: Primed for traditional applications; unprimed for more absorbent work; stretched or loose, depending on the artist's wishes.

  5. Canvas boards are a good solution for new artists. They are also excellent for use as a study before progressing onto the larger piece of finished work. Another benefit is that they store away conveniently.

  6. The most common canvas is made from cotton. Better cotton canvas is heavier in weight, and includes a minimum of impurities.

  7. The best canvas is made from linen. Fibres range from a few inches to a few feet in length and make the strongest, most resilient canvas possible.
