The Griffin Art Prize 2013: Call for entries

A valuable award for emerging artists in painting and drawing.

The Griffin Gallery is delighted to announce the second year of the Griffin Art Prize and calls for entries to this exciting award for painting and drawing, open to emerging UK based artists.

The Griffin Art Prize 2012 brought opportunities and exposure to all the short listed artists. Many sold work and had offers of exhibitions; most notably, winner Alzbeta Jaresova was included in the Catlin guide of the 40 most promising graduates of 2012 and has since been short listed for Bloomberg New Contemporaries.

Twenty short listed artists for this year’s Prize will be announced in September and have their work featured on www.griffinartprize.co.uk. Ten short-listed artists will be included in an exhibition in November 2013 at the Griffin Gallery in West London. This showcase will be seen by collectors, curators and other art world professionals. The overall winner will be awarded a six month working residency in the Studio Building, London W11, to develop an individual exhibition for the Griffin Gallery in September 2014. Winsor & Newton, Liquitex and Conté à Paris will offer sponsorship deals to selected short listed artists worth £250 each.

We are excited to have four notable judges selecting the shortlist and ultimate winner of the Griffin Art Prize 2013.

  • Zavier Ellis is director of East London gallery, CHARLIESMITHlondon, and co-founder of ‘The Future Can Wait’, a museum scale exhibition of emerging artists organized in partnership with the Saatchi Gallery.
  • Andrew Grassie makes miniature egg tempera paintings based on photographs of the art world around him. They appear in international collections such as the Tate, London and the Goetz collection, Munich.
  • Jessica Lack is a freelance arts journalist and writer. She has just completed a writer’s residency at Jerwood Visual Arts and is currently working on a series of scripts for Tate Media on the history of Modern art.
  • Jenny Lindén Urnes is owner of Winsor & Newton and Liquitex, she is also chair of the jury for the Beckers Art Award. Established in 1987, this award has been given to several of Sweden's most innovative and exciting young artists.

Emerging UK artists (graduated since 2008) have until 26 July to submit their applications.
