About Rebecca Byrne

Born in Chicago, USA 2012 MA Fine Art, Chelsea College of Art and Design, London 2010 Post Graduate Diploma Fine Art, Chelsea College of Art and Design, London Currently lives and works in London A balance between truth and fiction combined with personal experiences are the main themes occurring in Byrne’s work. Working mainly in paint, thread and wax on canvas, she uses photography from varied sources to tackle themes of presence and absence. Byrnes' work presents an open door that an interested observer can mentally walk through so that the work may have a life in the viewer’s imagination. Byrnes’ current project is based on the role of artist as social anthropologist as she studies the studio spaces of the artists around her. Her paintings depict interiors that are void of objects while her surreal, collage-like drawings are inspired by objects within these studios. As with Byrnes' paintings, the pieces begin in photography but encourage the viewer to speculate on what the objects reflect about the people who have collected them.
