A Blog by Glyn Macey

Glyn MaceyCornish artist Glyn has just started his 9 month fundraising trip around the English Coast to raise money for the RNLI.  Following the great success of his previous fundraising project, Glyn will be producing 180 paintings from around the English coastline which will be auctioned on Ebay over a 9 month period, starting on Tuesday 1 July 2008. The paintings will cover an area including the Lancashire and Cumbria coastlines and Northumberland all the way down the coast to Cornwall.  We are very excited to have Glyn blogging for us during his travels and you can read all about his experiences here

Whitby & Robin Hoods Bay

WHITBY: What a fantastic town, very historic and with THE BEST Fish n' Chips EVER from the Magpie Cafe.

The home of Captain James Cook, Frank Sutcliffe and Dracula (temporary home!).  At least 274 pubs and 169 restaurants, well, a lot anyway. 3 quays, 4 piers, 2 lighthouses. Tiny cobbled alleyways, little archways leading to hidden courtyards, a marina, fish markets, a great Victorian Iron bridge - what else could you ask for.

For me, Whitby is like a giant Dartmouth, with the beaches of Newquay and all the charm of St. Ives...with cherries on!

ROBIN HOODS BAY: Tumbling down the hill like a pack of badly stacked cards, picture postcard in the extreme. The tiny alleyways and cottages are out of bounds to those on a diet of McBurgers.

Absolutely, Whitby is certainly one of the highlights of the entire English coast and a town that I will return to paint again and again!

Whitby - I love this town and have many fond memories - including The Magpie!
If I could live anywhere else other than Newcastle I'd want to live here. Sitting on the beach being lashed by the wind and spray makes me feel alive.
Robin Hoods Bay - lovely little hidden streets and alleyways but the walk up hill has nearly finished me off a couple of times!

Whitby...a great place! A refuge in the force of a long vicious rain storm. Warm and snug, eventually, in a pub at the end of the harbour. Great food. Fish naturally. Snug B&B. Windows looked out on the dark harbour. Twinkling lights and the Lifeboat came in after exercises and in prep for potential problems with the storm. Really good memories of a hospitable town.
