About Susan Young
Susan became interested in drawing and painting around her 40th birthday. Having moved to the country, she felt an urge to paint the scenery and started using oils and canvas paper whilst her husband was at work. She would draw inspiration from copying photos she taken over the years and at first, she only worked on 10" x 8" and could not stop a session until she had completed a painting.

Once her husband retired Susan decided not to paint at home as she preferred to work without interruptions so she joined an evening class. This evening class allowed her to experiment with different mediums and styles with satisfying results. Susan realised that she could achieve something first thought to be impossible. Following futher evening classes, Susan joined a local Art Group: Morton Art Group and Tuesday has become her 'paint day' where she continues to paint with different types of Winsor & Newton colour.

Susan Young's Work

"It took a long time to master watercolour but I now do watercolour in different ways i.e. tight & bright; loose & pale; monotone; in conjunction with pen. I now paint in most mediums - acrylic being the last one to conquer. I get on particularly well with Pastel but I would say Oils & Pastels are my favourites. I am currently working on an elephant in oils.

I take hundreds of photos but they never look the same as when you see the them in real life; I find that using my Winsor & Newton paint box to make watercolour sketches helps to record the feel and the colours & tones to use in the future for full size paintings. I then draw up onto required size of paper and use Winsor & Newton tubes of artists quality paints for the final painting.

I have been exhibiting in local coffee houses and have now arranged 3 exhibitions for our club as a whole for this year, with possibilities of a further one in the pipeline."
