About Peter L Folkes
Peter Folkes was born in Beaminster, Dorset. He trained as a painter at the West of England College of Art, Bristol. His studies were interrupted by military service between 1942-47 as a draughtsman in the Royal Corps of Signals in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He was awarded a Mentioned in Despatches 1944.

In 1952 Peter was elected an Associate of the Royal West of England Academy, an Academician seven years later and a Council Member 1987-90 and 1991-94. In 1963 he was awarded Goldsmiths Travelling Scholarship which enabled him to travel widely in the United States of America and to paint under the American influence.

A few years later Peter was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, In 1981 and 1983 Peter became a joint winner of the Winsor & Newton prize for the best group of paintings by a member in the Royal Institute annual exhibition.

In 1989 Peter retired as Head of the Department of Fine Art, Faculty of Art & Design, Southampton Institute of Higher Education.

In the nineties Peter was elected an Honorary Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and appointed a consultant for Winsor & Newton. He was also appointed External Examiner for Certificate of Higher Education in Humanities at the University of Southampton.

Since 1965, Peter has worked as a demonstrator in painting for Winsor & Newton and as a tutor for Gallion and Artscape Painting Holidays.

In 1999 Peter was made an Honorary Member of the United Society of Artists.
