About Peter Gander
I trained at Barnet, Herts and Canterbury College of Art, (as it was then) in Kent, UK, where I received a Batchelor of Arts (Hons) Degree. I have worked as an art director in London for many years and have sold paintings from Dulwich to Dundee.
My watercolours reveal a bold, confident and loose style, which utilise the best qualities of this tricky medium. Look out for some famous local Kentish landmarks, such as the very popular 'Wheelers Oyster Bar' and my series of humorous retro-style seaside postcard paintings, such as 'Winderful Whitstable' and 'Best wishes from Whitstabubble', which are stocked (as postcards) in some Whitstable shops, such as 'Taking the Plunge', High Street, Whitstable.
My blogspot shows my latest sketches, paintings and linocuts and the stories and work-in-progress pics behind them.
Peter Gander's Work
I have been working as a graphic artist and art director in London for 20 years now, and though my very creative job allows me to draw on a daily basis (something I never take for granted), I wanted to explore other areas of art merely touched upon during my art education. Thus I have explored acrylics and loose watercolours which suit my bold style.
My 'graphic artist' background often shines through and pieces often retain a 'poster-esque' feel about them. My own artistic 'heroes' are David Hockney; Edward Hopper; the Impressionists and many others. I always strive for simplicity, not for me the small brush and intricate detail. I like the bold and striking. If expressed with flair, all the better. Which probably explains my recent interest in linocuts, a very suitable medium for the bold mark-maker.
Peter Gander uses Winsor & Newton because
They make great portable watercolour pan sets, ideal for a roving artist like me who paints in my London lunch hour!
