Molly Sheehan - Featured Artist
My name is Molly Sheehan and I am an A- Level student studying art and design among other subjects at Cedars Upper School Leighton Buzzard. I’ve always been really into art but didn’t study it as GCSE as I wasn’t actively encouraged to do so, instead I did Art Textiles which is where I started to experiment with different textures and medias although this was all fabric based.
Since I’ve started studying art by itself I’ve found that I prefer to paint freely rather than sketch or sew. Of course I have to do the former quite frequently as it is a vital part of my course; which is also combined with, primary research (sketchy part), artist reference and refining. I’m very comfortable using acrylic because of the intensity of colour that they can produce unlike others I like the fact they dry quickly as I prefer to paint quickly and thickly paying more attention to movement than overbearing detail. This doesn’t mean I intend my paintings to be abstract I strive to give them a definite form with a lot of energy and romance.

I find that if one makes a mistake with acrylic it’s wonderful for overlaying it quickly and easily because it is so rich. As I mentioned I like to paint quick and thick to create some surface texture witch is a throwback from being a textiles student but something I’m very happy with. This has all stemmed from my admiration of the expressionist painters and I love showing the brush work as they do.

I paint onto anything and everything I can find from conventional surfaces like paper, stretch and hard back canvas to walls, clay and wood of different sorts. When working with wood particularly MDF I like to add structure and layer the wood into a warped 3D effect.
I want to carry on perusing art at least into further education and am currently looking at doing an art and design foundation year at a range of different colleges. I’m not entirely sure as to how or if I could make a full time career out of my art but I’m sure I’ll sort something out.
