About Josie Tipler
Specialising in animals, I studied in Graphic design in 1964 and this influence shows clearly in my work. My first solo exhibition was in 2000 although I have been painting pet portrait commissions since 1986. I have exhibitied work throughout the south east, mainly in group exhibtions and have been resident artist at Gallery North in Hailsham for 2 years. I run a print and design business in Hailsham, paint pet portraits, paint for exhibition, run demonstrations and workshops for Art Groups throughout the South and am chair of the Arlington Arts Group. A great admirer of the colour and vitality Franz Marc and the cubist styles of Braque and Picasso.
Josie Tipler's Work
I love to experiment with styles and mediums. Pets by Josie is my commission business - I paint from photographs in either watercolour, pastel, pencil, oil or acrylic and generally follow a fairly formal style, although I have a selection called "Inspired by" where I encourage those wanting a commission to choose their favourite artist and I will create the portrait in that style. My work for exhibition is quite different - MOVEMENT is my current passion, showing birds in flight, fish swimming. This suits a cubist style. Acrylics and oils work well together for this - I love the speed of underpainting in Acrylics to create the dynamic image, then the flexibility of adding blending and depth with oils. I have recently started a series of more abstract images based on the contrasts of tone and distortions of colour caused by brilliant light, combined with a touch of images of space and nebulae as seen through a telescope.
