About Barbara Craig
I became a professional artist in 2005 after many years in various design jobs, a stint as a picture framer and a very enjoyable 5 years as an art technician at a top boys' school.
I paint mostly in acrylics and mixed media and my main subject matter is currently landscape. My influences are too numerous to mention thanks to the joys of internet searches! In 2011 I will be showing a body of work entitled 'Artistic Rambling' in 4 venues in Ireland and hope next year to show in France where I have a second home.
Barbara Craig's Work
I spend a lot of time walking in the countryside, every walk will contain an instance that permeates, the details evaporate and an impression of a beautiful moment from that day remains; the light, colours, patterns, the movement.
A wide vista or a particular spot will trigger my mind to hold onto that moment and when distilled it flows onto the page. I see the landscape and capture its significant elements in my mind’s eye, I love the colours and I want to paint their intensity, put the energy of the elements into brushstrokes and mark making using acrylics, pastel, charcoal, inks.
When the physicality of the act of painting takes over and the brain disengages it’s wonderful, joyful, to me a planned picture is a wearisome thing. I thrive on spontaneity in applying media, impulsive and intuitive, a restraint of detail. Relinquishing control and painting without anxiety gives me great satisfaction. To achieve total freedom when completing a piece is my goal. A carefree approach to painting is what I hope to convey when demonstrating to art groups, rules are made to be broken!
