During his professional career he has received critical acclaim from the UK, US, Western Europe and South America. His love of nature and of imagery that uplifts has made him popular with private collectors and public art collections, including hospital collections.
Currently he is represented by the Bayview Gallery, in Maine, USA and is also exhibiting at the Frames Gallery in Perth, Scotland.
Agamemnon Otero's Work
A great influence to Otero has been his experience of fighting cancer at the age of 18 and again at 27 years old. Having spent a lot of time in hospitals coupled with his previous experience of working as a part-time medical assistant in the US, Otero began to research and understand the benefits of art in healing places. This led him to loan his "Mother and Son", a series of four paintings, and then to donate "The Circle of Life", a triptych to the Royal Edinburgh Infirmary. Creating art for healing spaces is still a mission of his.
Critics have described his work as containing the philosophy and style of the Fauves, where he simplifies forms and colour to portray his subjects in a universal light. His use of colour shows the viewer the intensity of his life and others in a pictorial and often uplifting way.
Otero is inspired by nature and always chooses to experience the place or subject in order to paint it. This gives his work a sense of spontaneity and immediacy which he then works on in his studio.
"I have a passion for colour and love the W&N product range. I have used the Artisan Water Mixable Oils, Artists' Acrylic & Galeria Acrylic, unprimed canvas & canvas boards, soft pastels & fixatives, not to mention the Cotman Water Colours! So much of my work has W&N impregnated within it."
"The images & tones I work with derive from natural phenomenon. Nature's vivid colours and untamed geometry guide my painting. I distil the physical world that inspires me staying close to my subject, while invoking its energetic pulse. I am fascinated by the space in-between, the crack amidst the physical and metaphysical."
