About Tomas O'Maoldomhnaigh

I am a self taught artist born in Limerick City, Ireland in 1956. I have been drawing and paintings for as long as I can remember. I first exhibited when I was in my early teens and I have been exhibiting ever since. To date I have had 16 solo art exhibitions as well as numerous group exhibitions all over Ireland.

My favourite subject is the human figure and portrait but I paint anything that takes my fancy at the time. After 15 years working for the Irish Public Service I decided to take on year off and try my hand as an artist. It worked out so well that over 16 years later I’m still a full time professional portrait, figurative, landscape and equine artist. I have painted corporate portraits of many of Ireland’s top corporate companies. I have illustrated a book called the ‘Book of Clare.

Tomas O'Maoldomhnaigh's Work

The human form is intricate, elegant, powerful, beautiful, rarely still. For artists like me it’s the ultimate challenge. When painted well it reflects the artist, the subject and the viewer, challenging each to their personal emotions. The naked or near naked body can translate the complexities of art, and requires the delving deeper below the layers for further meaning be they aesthetic, cultural or psychological or more likely all of the above.

My works are an exploration through the labyrinth of ideas and feelings my own and others of the human form. I am not merely interested in the body itself but the techniques or colour and form that I translate onto a flat surface to give the illusion of 3D. They must be convincing and anatomically correct and above all attractive.

Though I’m uncomfortable with labels my form or style of painting could be referred to as contemporary realism. I have always loved Representational painting and being impressed by those artists with classical training. My personal tastes lean toward more classical art that honoured the traditions of former generations.
