Ingrid Solesvik's Work
I have an affection for painting water and maritime motives, perhaps this comes from living in Stavanger, close to the sea on the west coast of Norway. The contrast of light and shadow has always intrigued me. In mixed media I translate real forms and structures from nature and life to abstract and sometimes semi-abstract forms so that it looks both flat and three-dimensional. I may fragment the image and add an atmosphere. I plan my work, apply layers of water based paint and ink and may add material or objects in the wet paint for structure and variations, then allow drying time before applying the next layer.

In the final stage the composition is the most important and it let me know when to stop. I have several paintings in the process at the same time. I have found mixed media to be freeing and flexible, and a good medium for expressing my intentions. With water colour I choose motives which I find appealing. Nature is my primary model and I create works that are easy to read. Colour and tone is so important for achieving freshness, and I work in the effects of complimentary colours and value range. I paint either plain air or paint in my studio. When I am working inside I may use a photographic image or paint from memory. I do wet-in-wet, dry on wet or dry on dry.

Ingrid Solesvik uses Winsor & Newton because
The Winsor & Newton products are reliable and lasting. I have been using the WN water colours over many years now, and I am beginning to understand the colours I use. There are so much more to experiment with in water colour than just applying the various colour on the paper. It takes quite a bit of practice before one pays attention to the behavior of each colour; the pigments, how they flow or bite when used wet on dry or wet on wet during the drying process. It is an everlasting research I find so exciting.
