Factory Tour - Colour Making & Quality Control

Aside from the specialist formulations, there are two basic processes in colour making; first the pigment and binder must be combined together in a mixer.

After mixing, the colour must be milled to disperse the pigment evenly throughout the binder.  Different machinery must be chosen to ensure each colour is dispersed as finely as possible.  Finely dispersed colour ensures strong, bright colours on the palette.  The length of time, pressure and type of milling varies for each colour, some may take an hour or so, some may take days.

Quality Control carry out different tests on finished colour, along with its drying rate, mass tone and undertone which must be assessed against all the previous batches.  On passing all the appropriate tests, colour can then be filled into pans or tubes for sale either in their own right or as a component of larger sets.
